I just love technology... when it works...

It's happened for the second time. The hard drive in my Mac laptop has died. So far it seems like the notebook 2.5" hard drives have a standard life of just under three years. The only good part about this is that they have a three year warranty. This one had just under a month left when I sent it away, so it should get me a new one back. I'll use that one as an external backup drive, because I do not want to risk putting a reconditioned one back into the laptop. Also, I've already bought a new one for the laptop anyway. It's amazing the prices. The drive that was in it was about $400 two and a bit years ago now and that was 120GB, the biggest around at that time. Now, the new one was $130, and it's 250GB. Inflation? What inflation? Well.. on computer parts like this anyway.

My friends laptop had the same problem, so in addition to having to fix mine I also had to fix his. His was pretty easy though. He's got a Dell, and the hard drive just slides right out of it, so it was easy to replace. That's all back up and going too, so we are all back on the way to working PC's again.

What I think made these two hard drives crash was a sudden burst of humid heat. Hard drives are susceptible to that at the best of times, but the change of seasons does tend to have a lot of them just fall over like that. Laptop drives especially. I think a lot of others have had the same problem because there isn't a great deal of choice around these days for laptop hard drives. No one has any in stock. I just hope that people check the warranty before they throw the old ones out!
